Weston Pools
Belvidere
4th March 2017
This months match was at Weston Pools in Oswestry, on Belvidere Pool.
We met up at the nearby cafe and the draw was done for the match and the semi-finals of the knockout cup. With Offy taking his beloved to Rome there would be another bye straight to the final of the knockout cup. Tony Wilson drew Richie Williams in the first semi-final, meaning Dave Edwards would get the bye yet again. More jam than Hartley's that lad.
The fishery manager Giles had told us the best way to peg the lake and it just needed slight alteration due to the fact wannabe Cassanova Chris Williams had slept in with another late night conquest and missed his alarm.
After a good feed we arrived at the fishery full of anticipation. Weston Pools is a lovely venue and Belvidere is a nice mixed species lake with Barbel, Carp, F1's, Tench and Ide the main target species. The clubhouse is right next to the pool and would provide temptation for anyone not catching to get an early bath in cold beautiful amber nectar.
With 15 members in attendance and 32 pegs on the lake we all had a bit of room. The pegs with features were the ones everyone wanted. Mini islands, sunken pads and aerators, all known to hold fish.
The first section saw Tony Wilson make the most of Peg 3, the flier, and win both the section and the match with 39lb 8oz. Fishing maggot to the sunken pads for a nice mixed bag of Tench, Barbel, Ide and a few F1's. This was also enough to tie for the seasons biggest weight so far.
The second section saw Richie Williams snare a couple of munters again and take the section win with 19lb 2oz and also take the biggest fish of the season so far with a 7lb 8oz Barbel taken on maggot on the rod. After numerous attempts to land it he had to enlist some help from Paul to change his landing net head as it wouldn't fit in his winter pan net. A solid effort from what turned out to be a tough section. Although the fish are starting to feed and spread out, there didn't seem to be much down that end of the lake. Despite a couple of practice sessions Dennis had a hard day but managed to just pip Keith so all was not lost.
In the third section despite Frank Branscombe staring straight at the clubhouse bar for 5 hours, he managed to resist temptation and put 21lb 9oz on the scales after catching on the tip towards the posts. Some big F1's were enough to pip Norman to the section money and take 4th place overall.
The fourth and final section produced some good weights with Bob O'Neill taking 24lb for 3rd overall, Colin Roe 19lb, and Dave Edwards weighing 35lb for second place and the section win. Dave caught a nice mixed bag with Tench, Barbel and some huge F1's. A great performance from an unfancied peg.
Through to the final of the winter knockout cup are Tony Wilson and Dave Edwards.
Next month we're at Meadow View getting all snarled up in proper carp.
