Garbolino Club Angler of the Year 2019

Friday 3rd May 2019

Representing the club this year were Tony Wilson, Dave Edwards and Paul Edwards.
We decided to travel down to Tunnel Barn Farm for the Midlands qualifier.

After 3 previous attempts at qualifying Dave was hoping to make his first final. He drew House Pool peg 8, a decent draw but with plenty of fliers on House he would have his work cut out. After struggling to work it out he's fished banded pellet down the edge and amassed 78lb for third on the lake. With only the top 2 qualifying from House pool he looked to have fallen agonisingly short again.

Paul drew on High pool peg 38. Not really a fancied peg and with 7ft down the track he didn't have any rigs deep enough. Dave had pinched all his mainline off him so he had to make do with what he had. This meant fishing down the edge in 3ft and shallow at 5m. He had a tough day and didn't manage to qualify. Hopefully he's learnt from it and can have another crack next year.

Tony drew peg 36 on New pool. A narrow and shallow canal stretch with only 3.5ft down the track. He fished corn and hemp in 2ft in the margins and across and caster shallow at 6m. The fish refused to stay under the pole tip and he's had to rotate lines all day. Usually the top 3 go through on New pool and Tony was in 3rd place with 82-11 until the last person weighed in and he'd missed out by 10oz.

With us all a bit disappointed we grabbed a burger and decided to hang around for the presentation in case Dave had won his section. As it turned out the person who had finished second on House Pool was unable to fish the final so Dave had qualified by default.
For the first time ever they also decided to put 4 qualifiers  through from New Pool meaning Tony had crept through the back door too. This was due to there being so many people on the Midlands qualifier that they decided to put 21 through instead of the usual 15 and less will qualify from the Northern and Southern qualifiers which aren't as well attended.

Anyway, by hook or by crook, the Sandbank will have two representatives in the final for the third year running.

The final will take place on Barston on Wednesday 26th June.
