The Cunneries - September 3rd 2016

Sly Edwards picks up the prize

The Cunneries - Old Canal
3rd September 2016

A new venue for the club and one that a lot of members had never fished. We were booked on the Old Canal, a rectangular pool with 20 pegs, 10 on either side.

As usual, there were a few sneaky practice sessions in the weeks leading up to this one and it seemed to be fishing ok. There were 17 in attendance for this one and the pegging was quite tight.
The forecast was for a drop in temperature and rain, rain and more rain and it wasn't wrong, it started as we were setting up and was on for the day. Combined with a cool breeze it really didn't seem to help the fishing. Despite a few members getting off to a decent start it soon tailed off and most of the match was spent searching different lines and depths without much success.
The first section was really tough and was won convincingly by Dennis Clayton with 9lb 12oz.
The second section saw 2 of the top 3 overall with Keith Howard netting 18lb 11oz for 2nd in section and 3rd overall. The section and match winner was that man Dave 'Stallone' Edwards from peg 9 with 36lb 9oz. He used corn skins to temp mainly F1's and a few carp and kept the fish settled in front of him by playing all his fish round the back of the island, clever. He was so far ahead of the field he even managed to stop fishing every 10 minutes to check Lisa still loved him. Ahhhh how cute?
On the other side of the lake it wasn't any easier. One very cold and wet chimp did the walk of shame with a couple of hours to go, closely followed by one very cold and wet pensioner.
That left Chris Roe and Tony Wilson to discuss whether the extra room would lead to them catching a late run of fish....dream on. The third section was by a wide margin by Chris Roe with 26lb 3oz which was also enough for 2nd place overall.
The last section was the tightest of them all with less than 3lb between the top 3. The section win went to Tony Wilson with 18lb 1oz, after a fast start with a bite every drop in the first 20 mins, the peg just switched off.
When Dave found out he'd won he copied Jamie Hughes at Fisho' and jumped in the lake, he claims he slipped but I'm not convinced.
It was a shame it fished so badly on the club's first visit as it can be, and usually is very good.
Cudmore next on the Suez Canal, can't wait already.....,
